Glasgow Orkney and Shetland Benevolent Society

Providing Support When It's Needed

We are a charity founded in 1837 to provide financial relief for people from the Orkney and Shetland living in or passing through Glasgow.
Our Aims
  • Offering financial assistance for educational purposes to students from Orkney and Shetland  studying in Glasgow.

  • Providing temporary financial aid to people from Orkney and Shetland, who live in or are passing through Greater Glasgow and find themselves in need due to illness or an emergency.

  • Supporting any other related causes that trustees considers appropriate.

We offer two grant schemes - a bursary aimed at students and a more general grant programme for those in need.

Eligibility and Process
  • Anyone with direct connections to Orkney or Shetland who is in Glasgow and needs assistance, including students, is eligible to apply.

  • General grant applications can be submitted at any time.

  • Student Bursaries should be submitted by 31 October and priority will be given to those applying to the Society for the first time.

  • Student bursaries are considered in early November with payment in December.

  • Emergency aid funds can be made available (depending on the amount needed) almost by return.

  • Grants are paid by cheque.  We require two signatories and are therefore unable to do bank transfers.

Application Forms

Please note, 2024 Student Bursary applications are now closed.

If your application is successful, we do not require any further information or reporting from awardees. However, we would be grateful if you could spread the word about the Society to fellow Orcadians and Shetlanders.
